| At last someone from within the game tells it how it is as far as the gerbil-faced one is concerned. Well kind of, at least - I'd have preferred him to be a little less diplomatic about it...Former Manchester United defender Paul McGrath claims Steve McClaren's appointment as England manager "looks a step to far" for the former Middlesbrough boss. McGrath, who played under McClaren in 1996-97 when he was assistant coach at Derby, is surprised by the 45-year-old's rapid ascent. McGrath told the Guardian: "I'm amazed at Steve's rise. You could tell at Derby he liked patterns of play and all that stuff but it's simply amazing how quick it's happened for him. "From obscurity he was suddenly picked as Sir Alex Ferguson's number two. If he hadn't been given that break at Manchester United it would never have happened. "You have to have so many gifts as an international manager. Fair play to him being nominated for the job - let alone getting it. "But it looks a step too far. An England manager has to have special skills and nerves of steel."
Keeper of the heretic's fork of doom. |

| | I don't rate MacLaren at all. Very lucky to get the job. He only got it because of the lack of potential managers. |

| | I agree about O'Neill. He could have got the best out of the players we've got. |

| If he can turn Villa around by just adding Petrov - imagine what he could have done with England

| | It's typical England though, always appointing the wrong man. It goes back to when they appointed Ron Greenwood, and everybody knew that Brian Clough should have got the job. They got rid of Venables because of his alleged dodgy deals. Appoint Graham Taylor because he had 1 good year at Villa, playing route one. paid bloody Eriksson £5 million per year to make us a worse side, then replace him with Ron Greenwood Mark II. |
